The Scalp-First Fix for Dandruff and Thinning Hair | The Pixie Garden Hair Podcast Ep. 06
Delena MarklandShare
When dandruff and thinning show up together, the fix starts at the scalp -- and Delena watched it happen in her own home. In this episode she walks through the scalp-first routine that cleared her husband's years-long dandruff and brought visible regrowth: exfoliating with the DETOX Scalp Scrub, feeding the scalp with the rosemary-based BOOST Scrub, and using the 18.21 Anti-Flake Shampoo. She explains why a healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy growth, the difference between dandruff and dry scalp, and where ProCell comes in when you need more.

Episode Summary
Licensed cosmetologist Delena Markland shares the real, in-home case that shaped how she treats scalp health: her husband battled dandruff and thinning for years until they fixed the scalp itself. She covers exfoliation, rosemary, anti-flake actives, the dandruff-versus-dry-scalp distinction, and when to escalate to ProCell. Scalp health supports growth; results vary, and nothing here is a guarantee.

Jess: Welcome to The Pixie Garden Hair Podcast. I am Jess, here with licensed cosmetologist Delena Markland. Delena, dandruff and thinning hair at the same time -- that feels overwhelming. Where does someone even start?
Delena Markland: At the scalp, every time. And I do not say that as a slogan -- I watched it work on my own husband. He fought dandruff and thinning for years and tried everything on top of his hair. Nothing held. What finally changed it was treating the scalp itself: exfoliating with the DETOX Scalp Scrub, the charcoal, peppermint, and tea tree one; using the rosemary-based BOOST Scrub; and an 18.21 anti-flake shampoo. The flaking stopped, and as his scalp got healthier, he actually saw regrowth. Healthy hair grows out of a healthy scalp, not the other way around.
Jess: Why does the scalp matter so much for growth specifically?
Delena Markland: Your follicle lives in the scalp. If it is buried under buildup, oil, and dead skin, or the skin is inflamed, that follicle is not in a great position to do its job. Exfoliating clears the buildup, stimulates circulation, and resets the skin so the follicle has room to work. That is why I start with a scrub instead of another serum on the lengths.
Jess: A lot of people assume dandruff is just a dry scalp. Are those the same thing?
Delena Markland: No, and treating one like the other makes it worse. Dry scalp is small, white, dry flakes from a lack of moisture -- that one wants gentler, less-frequent washing and soothing ingredients. Dandruff is usually larger, oilier, yellowish flakes tied to the scalp's microbiome and buildup. That one wants exfoliation and anti-flake actives like tea tree and charcoal. My husband's was true dandruff, which is why the DETOX scrub and the 18.21 anti-flake worked when a moisturizing approach never did.
Jess: Rosemary gets talked about everywhere right now. Does it actually do anything?
Delena Markland: It supports circulation to the scalp, which is the environment growth depends on, and that is exactly why I keep the BOOST Rosemary, Ginger, and Caffeine Scrub in the routine. I will be honest with you -- rosemary is not a guarantee, and I would never sell it that way. What it does is help create a healthier scalp, consistently, a few times a week. Consistency is the whole game.
Jess: Where should someone start at home, and when do they need more?
Delena Markland: Start simple: exfoliate the scalp two to three times a week with the DETOX or BOOST scrub, use an anti-flake shampoo like the 18.21 if dandruff is the issue, and give it a few weeks. If thinning is the bigger concern and you want a clinical step, that is where ProCell microchanneling comes in -- it is the in-salon escalation I point clients to when at-home scalp care is not enough. Start with the scalp, stay consistent, and escalate if you need to.
Jess: Fix the soil before you worry about the plant. I love that. You can find the DETOX and BOOST scrubs at thepixiegarden.com. Thanks for listening to The Pixie Garden Hair Podcast.
