The Pixie Garden Hair Podcast Episode 13 - dimethicone lice treatment with Delena Markland

Does Dimethicone Really Kill Lice? | The Pixie Garden Hair Podcast Ep. 13

Delena Markland

Drugstore lice shampoos are failing families because lice have built resistance to the pesticides in them. In this back-to-school episode Delena, a licensed cosmetologist, explains why dimethicone works when the old treatments fail -- it kills lice physically, not chemically, so resistance cannot develop -- and walks through the treat-and-comb rhythm she teaches with the Lice Mamas Ultimate Lice Treatment Kit she stocks in her own salon.

Episode Summary

Pesticide lice shampoos attack the louse's nervous system with chemicals lice have now largely evolved resistance to -- the strains parents call super lice. Dimethicone is different: a silicone-based oil that coats the louse and blocks its breathing openings, killing it physically. A bug cannot evolve its way out of being coated and suffocated, which is why dimethicone keeps working when the drugstore aisle fails. Delena covers what dimethicone actually does to the eggs -- it kills some of them, but egg kill is partial and unreliable, which is why the repeat treatment 7 to 9 days later is mandatory -- why the professional stainless steel nit comb is still not optional, and her weekly comb-check routine for the school year.

Jess: Welcome back to The Pixie Garden Hair Podcast. I'm Jess, here with licensed cosmetologist Delena Markland. Delena, it's almost back-to-school season, which means the lice calls are coming. Last time we talked lice, you told the story of the school calling about all of your kids at once. Today you want to get into the science?

Delena Markland: I do, because the question I hear most in my chair is, we treated and they came back. And the answer to that is the reason I stock the Lice Mamas Ultimate Lice Treatment Kit in my salon instead of pointing parents to the drugstore aisle. It's built around dimethicone, and dimethicone works completely differently than the old lice shampoos.

Jess: Okay, so what's actually different?

Delena Markland: The classic drugstore treatments are pesticides. They attack the louse's nervous system with a chemical. The problem is lice have been exposed to those chemicals for decades, and in most of the country now you're dealing with what people call super lice, meaning strains that have built real resistance. You can follow the box perfectly and still lose.

Jess: And dimethicone doesn't have that problem?

Delena Markland: Right, because it isn't a poison at all. Dimethicone is a silicone-based oil. It coats the louse and blocks the openings it breathes through, so the treatment works physically, not chemically. A bug can evolve resistance to a chemical attack on its nervous system. It cannot evolve its way out of being coated and suffocated. That's why dimethicone keeps working when the pesticide shampoos fail.

Jess: That also sounds a lot gentler for the kid whose head it's going on.

Delena Markland: That's the other half of why I switched. With a pesticide, you're putting a neurotoxic chemical on a child's scalp, sometimes over and over when it doesn't work the first time. Dimethicone is the same class of ingredient you'll find in everyday conditioners. After over 25 years behind the chair, my rule has become: if there's a version that works better and is gentler, that's the one that goes home with my clients.

Jess: Walk us through how a family actually uses it.

Delena Markland: Start on completely dry hair. Saturate it with the 100% dimethicone oil, root to tip, scalp included, and let it sit for the time in the kit directions. Then you wash the oil out. Next comes the enzyme mousse, which is a separate product with a separate job -- it dissolves the glue holding the eggs on. Saturate root to tip, leave it five minutes, then put a second coat on without rinsing and leave that five more minutes. Then you comb. And I want to be honest about the combing, because this is where every method wins or loses. Dimethicone does kill some of the eggs, but it does not reliably kill all of them. Egg kill is partial, and that is exactly why you treat again 7 to 9 days later, to catch whatever hatches after the first round. On top of that, in a real bathroom, on a real wiggly kid, coverage is never perfect, and a dead nit is still cemented to the hair shaft, so it still has to come off. That is why the comb-out and the repeat treatment are mandatory, not insurance. The Lice Mamas kit comes with a professional stainless steel nit comb, and that comb is not optional. Treat, comb in small sections, and repeat the treatment on the schedule in the directions so anything that hatched in between gets caught. Families that follow that rhythm get out of the lice cycle. Families that skip the comb end up calling me again in two weeks.

Jess: Any prevention tips for the school year?

Delena Markland: Three things. Do a quick weekly comb-check behind the ears and at the neckline, because catching it early is everything. Keep long hair tied up at school. And teach kids not to share hats, brushes, or headphones. If it does happen, don't panic and don't shave anyone's head. I almost made that mistake myself once. You have a method that works.

Jess: Where do people find the kit?

Delena Markland: It's at thepixiegarden.com, the same Lice Mamas Ultimate Lice Treatment Kit I use for my own family and recommend across my salon. One kit covers the treatment, the professional nit comb, and the full protocol.

Jess: That's the show. Full write-up and the kit are linked on this episode's page at thepixiegarden.com. See you next time.
